ABOUT EKHAYA

Ekhaya 2024, South Africa’s cultural showcase at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, provided a dynamic platform for celebrating South African culture, sports, andinternational connections.

Led by the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, the initiative promoted the nation’s rich heritage while supporting athletes and fosteringcross-cultural engagement. Over 47 days, Ekhaya became a space for cultural exchange, business networking, and celebration of South African identity on a global stage.

The programme was divided into two phases—Olympic and Paralympic—with each phase celebrating 30 Years of Democracy through Sport, Arts & Culture. Key
events across both phases are summarized below:

OLYMPICS PHASE (23 JULY – 11 AUGUST 2024)

Athletes Welcome Event Hosted by the SA Embassy in France

Team South Africa was officially welcomed by Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa at the South AfricanEmbassy. Mi Casa performed, and the event was honoured by dignitaries.

Opening of Ekhaya Function

A grand opening at La Villette, Paris, attended by ±1500 guests, featured cultural performances andspeeches to kickstart the two-month celebration.

SA Night Function

A cultural evening with over ±2300 guests enjoying South African music, art, and cuisine, highlighting the
country’s natural beauty and diversity.

3 August 2024

Business to Business Forum

South African and French business leaders gathered to discuss economic collaboration. The event
focused on Sport, Arts and Culture as a Catalyst for Economic Inclusivity and Change.

Women’s Day Celebration

A celebration of the achievements of South African women athletes, with inspiring speeches and performances, focusing on Women in Sport, Arts and Culture.
